About The Arthritis Foundation

The Arthritis Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation setup to assist in the research of arthritis, the development of cures and treatments for people suffering from the condition and the research into how to provide a better quality of life for those affected. The organisation has been sponsoring, and continues to sponsor researchers worldwide through the method of grants, and to date has pledged hundreds of millions of dollars. The Arthritis Foundation provides a number of services to the community of arthritis sufferers including public forums for the expression of information and points of view, instructional courses that can be watched and participated in at home, exercise classes and educational courses, a magazine dedicated to the topic and brochures and pamphlets answering some of the most common and not-so common questions relating to arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation is run mostly by volunteers who have helped to set up a national institute for arthritis and a phone and email help line that has helped hundreds of thousands of people suffering with arthritis. The major decisions relating to the foundation are made by volunteers on the foundation committee, a committee which is made up of volunteers from the over 150 chapters across the United States of America.

The foundation was formed in the late 1940s by a group of scientists with the aim of properly understanding and learning how to prevent, treat and cure arthritis by researching new technologies and medicines. When the foundation began, it was believed that there were around 7 million sufferers in America, a number that pales in comparison to the estimated 70 million today. Each year in May America recognises national Arthritis month and the foundation boasts a research budget of over $19 million.
